March 8th is the day for the release of The Walking Dead: Season One on DVD. This is perhaps the best horror series ever done for television. It was produced by Frank Darabont (director of The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist, and his participation brought the show up to a level of writing and acting that isn't usually associated with zombie films, much less television shows. Darabont wrote and directed the 90-minute pilot episode. I think that every horror aficionado who watched it was hooked that very night. I know I was. I immediately entered the contest to become a stand-in zombie for the second season, but I haven't heard anything. Sighs deeply with regret!
What Frank Darabont did here was to bring new life into the zombie craze and bring it up to a thinking man's level that adults could actually enjoy, too. The acting by the cast is terrific in every sense of the word. They add believability to an unbelievable theme, drawing the viewers into their world of destruction and hopelessness as they seek to find others who are alive and shelter from the creatures who want their flesh to eat. The special effects are also awesome, especially the horseback ride into the city of Atlanta. Needless to say, the zombies are right on the mark with their gruesome facial features and mindless walk through the empty streets. I wouldn't want to meet these fellows in a lonely alley at night.
The DVD two-disc set will have all six episodes in Widescreen format, plus several making of featurettes, behind the scenes on certain characters and episodes, a look at the writer of the comic book series that spawned the television show, plus a lot more. This is a DVD set you'll definitely want on your movie shelf. Now, the only question is when will Season Two begin? I'm thinking at the end of October in time for Halloween.
